Putin Announces 3 Day Ceasefire in Ukraine

Russia’s President Vladimir Putin announced a unilateral three day ceasefire 8-11 May 2025 in his invasion of Ukraine.

The ceasefire coincides with celebrations of the end of World War II in Europe.

Russia has made similar ceasefire announcements before. The most recent was for 30 hours over Easter which resulted only in a reduction of fighting, not a pause. More than 20 ceasefires have been attempted in Ukraine. All have failed, sometimes in a matter of minutes. Ceasefires are often regarded by many as an opportunity for Russian supply lines and troops to recharge.

Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha called for an immediate ceasefire lasting “at least 30 days” rather than 3 days.
