Pentagon Halts All Funding for Social Science Research
The Department of Defense abruptly halted all its funding for social science research.
This terminated 91 studies related to such threats as climate change, extremism and disinformation.
Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth said on social media, “[DOD] does not do climate change crap. We do training and war fighting.” In reality, until now DOD routinely studied social science issues in order to plan and prepare for future crises and threats to national security driven by societal pressures. Many of the projects cut off were studying how artificial intelligence is reshaping battlefields.
DOD projected savings of more than $30 million in the first year that its social science projects are ended, a drop in the bucket compared with the scale of the DOD budget.
