Pentagon Acting IG Begins to Investigate Hegseth’s Use of Signal

Pentagon Acting Inspector General Steven Stebbins began a probe into Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s use of the commercial messaging app Signal to discuss military operations.

The investigation was requested by the Senate Armed Services Committee’s top members from both major political parties.

Stebbins said his goal “is to determine the extent to which the Secretary of Defense and other DoD personnel complied with DoD policies and procedures for the use of a commercial messaging application for official business.” He will also look into “compliance with classification and records retention requirements.”

National Security Adviser Michael Waltz inadvertently included editor-in-chief Jeffrey Goldberg of the Atlantic magazine in a group Signal chat of 18 people in which Hegseth shared details about targets, weapons packages and sequencing for a military strike against Houthis in Yemen.
