Mutual Defense Compacts Between Universities Snowball

On her show, Rachel Maddow pulled together fragmented local news reports to show that universities are banding together in mutual academic defense compacts against Donald Trump’s demands at an accelerating pace.

In no particular order, she listed some of the better-known universities which are doing so or at least expressing general approval of the idea, typically through faculty senate votes, including:

  • Rutgers University in New Jersey
  • University of Nebraska at Lincoln
  • Indiana University at Bloomington
  • University of Mass at Amherst
  • Northwestern University
  • University of Oregon
  • Michigan State, advocating for the entire Big 10 to form a MADC

Universities expected to do so soon included:

  • Ohio State University
  • University of Michigan
  • University of Washington
  • possibly University of Minnesota
  • possibly Penn State University

Graduate student unions are also asking their schools to join a MADC, including at:

  • University of Minnesota
  • Cornell University
  • Stanford University
  • University of Chicago
  • Northwestern University
  • University of New Mexico
  • New Mexico State University
  • North Carolina State University
  • Johns Hopkins University
  • Massachusetts Institute of Technology
  • Dartmouth University
  • University of Iowa
