Meta Opens Doors for Hate Speech and Untruths
Meta changed its policies to allow more degrading, hate speech and false statements, especially against previously protected groups. Meta (Facebook, Instagram, Threads, WhatsApp) deleted from policies about hate speech several clauses that previously banned specific derogatory statements about protected groups. Meta added exceptions to allow anti-trans speech.
Meta abolished its fact-checking program. Its content moderation team will move from generally liberal California to conservative Texas.
Dana White, an ally of Donald J. Trump, will join Meta’s board of directors.
These announcements add to a recent pattern of actions and changes to curry favor with Republicans.
