After months of turmoil, liberal opposition candidate Lee Jae Myung won election over Kim Moon Soo of the People Power Party to become President of South Korea.

Nearly 80% of voters turned out, the highest proportion for a Presidential election since 1997.

The result was a dramatic swing from conservative Yoon Suk Yeol, the previous President who was ousted after the people and lawmakers repudiated his surprise attempt to impose martial law 3 December 2024. Yoon was impeached 14 December, then removed from office by a constitutional court more than two years before the scheduled end of his five-year term. He and several of his top officials have been tried in court for criminal insurrection. There have been three acting Presidents in the six months it has taken to reach this election.
