Judge Rules Mahmoud Khalil Must Be Allowed Meeting with Wife

Federal District Court Judge Michael Farbiarz ordered that Immigration and Customs Enforcement must allow detained Columbia University student Mahmoud Khalil to meet with his wife Noor Abdalla at the detention center in Louisiana where he is being held.

Abdalla was eight months pregnant when Khalil was detained 8 March 2025. She wants him to have a chance to hold his newborn son. ICE refused to allow it.

Farbiarz is considering Khalil’s challenge that his arrest was unconstitutional. In a written ruling, Farbiarz ordered that Khalil must be permitting a meeting with his wife and lawyers before 10:30 a.m. CDT 22 May 2025. On that day Khalil is due to appear before an immigration judge in Louisiana regarding Khalil’s challenge to his deportation, which is a separate case.

Khalil was detained and his green card revoked after Secretary of State Marco Rubio declared his presence in the USA presents a serious risk of adverse consequences for foreign policy. Under Section 237(a)(4)(C)(i) of the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA), this declaration by the Secretary of State makes a foreign national deportable.

Khalil participated in protests against Israel’s war in Gaza.
