Judge Blocks Freeze of USDA Funding for Maine School Lunches and Elderly Day Care

| 0

Federal District Court Judge John Woodcock Jr. issued a temporary restraining order to block the U.S. Department of Agriculture from cutting off its funding for school lunches and food for children and the elderly in day care in the state of Maine.

Woodcock’s ruling did not examine the merits of the federal government’s clash with Maine over policies regarding transgender athletes, which the government has been using to cut off federal funds to the state in multiple ways. Woodcock only ruled that the Department of Agriculture failed to adhere to the Administrative Procedure Act when it froze its funding to Maine’s nutrition programs.

Maine uses the funds USDA withheld for federal programs against hunger. The funds reimburse schools, day care and after-school programs for making available free or reduced-price meals to children and the elderly.
