Impending VA Staff Losses Reduced from 83,000 to 30,000

The Department of Veterans Affairs announced it will not carry out 83,000 planned job terminations, but will lose about 30,000 workers by the end of September 2025 through “the federal hiring freeze, deferred resignations, retirements, and normal attrition.”

Veterans groups continue to warn that the job losses will result in adverse consequences for former military members.

Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-CT), the ranking member of the Senate Veterans Affairs Committee bluntly called the downsizing of VA staff “breathtaking in its potential significance and its malevolence and cruelty.”

He said the VA “is bleeding employees across the board at an unsustainable rate because of the toxic work environment created by this administration and DOGE’s slash and trash policies.”
