House Passes Revised Monstrous Tax and Spending Bill

After Speaker Mike Johnson repeatedly held votes open until enough Republicans voting against it were browbeaten into changing their votes, and after Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries set a new record for using the privilege to speak to delay eight hours forty-four minutes, the monstrous tax and spending bill passed 218-214.

Donald Trump will sign it into law at 16:00 Friday.

Republicans danced on the floor of the House to the Village People’s Y.M.C.A, a gay anthem weirdly preferred by Trump as a rally song. They hugged. They posed with thumbs up for photographs.

In X (formerly Twitter), a post lamented “17 million people just lost health care. 18 million kids just lost school meals. 3 million Americans just lost food assistance.” Congressional Representative Derrick Van Orden (R-WI) replied “YES!” to it.

Congressional Representative Chris Murphy (D-CT) responded to Van Orden’s celebration of so much harm, posting “You need to understand these people know exactly how badly they are hurting people and they love it. It’s sick.”

Van Orden later deleted his post, claiming he meant to reply to something else.

On X, Vote Vets called the bill “shameless, cruel and un-American,” adding “They danced. They smiled. They gave a thumbs up. All after passing Trump’s “Big Beautiful Bill” that rips food, health care, and support away from Veterans — just to give Elon Musk and billionaires another tax break.”

Scripps News correspondent Elizabeth Landers talked with Congressional Representative Troy Nehls (R-TX) while he smoked a celebratory cigar on the Capitol steps. She asked, “Can I ask you about the CBO score and the idea that 11 million, 12 million Americans may lose health insurance?”

Nehls said, “I don’t have any faith and confidence in the CBO, their scoring, they’re wrong half the damn time. I don’t give any—nah. I’m not worried about the CBO.”

She followed up, “You’re not worried at all that Americans may lose their healthcare because of this bill?”

Nehls said, “Just some Americans that aren’t Americans. And that is, the illegals. Why should illegals be on Medicare? We did a great job with it all!”

According to his answers, Nehls did not understand the difference between Medicare and Medicaid, and who is eligible to get either of those. Undocumented immigrants pay taxes but cannot get Medicare.
