Harvard Threatened with Revocation of Certification to Host International Students

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem threatened to revoke Harvard University’s certification to host international students in the wake of its rejection of demands by Donald Trump’s regime to intrude significantly into the way the university operates.

Monitoring of faculty and students in particular would have a chilling effect on academic pursuits.

In a news release, DHS said it was “a scathing letter demanding detailed records on Harvard’s foreign student visa holders’ illegal and violent activities by April 30, 2025, or face immediate loss of Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) certification” which affects students on F-1 visas. The letter claimed the university is a “hostile learning environment” for Jews.

Harvard says 27.2% of its students are international. It is not clear how many have F-1 visas. When a university loses SEVP certification, normally students there on F-1 visas are allowed time to transfer to another institution rather than being forced to immediately leave the country. Since Trump was inaugurated, courts are hearing cases of people recently taken by ICE while their visas are still valid and before they are given any notice that their visa might be rescinded.

Noem also cancelled $2.7 million in federal grants for violence prevention. This is in addition to the $2.2 billion in grants and $60 million in federal contracts cancelled after Harvard refused to capitulate to the regime.
