Raids at two Tallahassee, Florida construction sites by Homeland Security Investigations, Florida Highway Patrol, and other state and federal law enforcement agencies detained more than 100 people.

Homeland Security Investigations is a branch of Immigration and Customs Enforcement trained to delve into complex criminal schemes such as human trafficking, drug smuggling, cybercrime and large-scale immigration fraud. It is not trained for hauling in individuals but is increasingly being used to do so.

Reports say every person’s identification and permits were check, and then they were either released or arrested with handcuffs or zip ties.

The Department of Homeland Security claimed all the arrests were of illegal aliens. It said some had previously been deported or had a criminal history.

Detainees were from Colombia, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua and Venezuela. Some had pending asylum cases. Some were initially released after showing proper documentation, then arrested.

Other construction sites in Tallahassee soon shut down for the day.
