DJT Plans to Send Thousands to Guantanamo

Donald Trump reportedly plans to send thousands of immigrants, purportedly illegal and including hundreds from nations that are USA allies, to the military prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba starting as soon as tomorrow.

Initial plans would transfer 9000 foreign nationals. About 800 are Europeans  and 170 are Russians. They come from the  as well as Belgium, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Poland, Turkey, Ukraine and the United Kingdom.

This is ostensibly to free bed space in immigrant detention facilities within the USA. European allies generally take deportees returned to them from the USA. Instead, Trump intends to put them in a notorious prison. Their countries of origin are not expected to be notified about their incarceration.

According to Senator Gary Peters (D-MI), the ranking Democrat on the Senate Homeland Security committee, it costs more than $100,000 per day to detain a person at Guantanamo.

The American Civil Liberties Union suggests in a lawsuit that about 70 immigrants are in the facility now with “punitive” conditions, rodents, not enough food, not enough clean clothes, and just one hour outside their cells. That case is being heard by District Court Judge Carl Nichols.
