DJT Orders Creation of a Military Zone Along the Southern Border

| 0

Donald Trump issued a memorandum to four department heads ordering the military to take control of federal lands along the southern border and turn it into a military buffer zone.

Native American reservations are excluded from the order. The Roosevelt Reservation, a 60 foot wide strip along the border, is included.

The buffer zone along the border will become designated as a military installation. Immigrants crossing it will be detained by soldiers for trespassing on military property and transferred directly to the Department of Homeland Security for deportation.

Normally, immigrants who cross the border illegally are arrested by law enforcement. The military is prohibited from carrying out law enforcement against civilians within the USA by the Posse Comitatus Act except in specific exceptional circumstances. Creating a military zone along the border is envisioned as a way to get around that law and prevent detained immigrants from ever being within the standard legal system.

The memorandum was addressed to:

  • Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum
  • Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem
  • Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth
  • Secretary of Agricultural Brooke Rollins
