Donald Trump ordered an additional 2000 National Guard troops and  700 Marines to deploy to Los Angeles, California, against the objections of Governor Gavin Newsom and Mayor Karen Bass.

Los Angeles Police Chief Jim McDonnell released a statement that he was confident LAPD can manage large demonstrations and military troops arriving without any coordination presented a “significant logistical and operational challenge.”

During the weekend several dozen protesters were arrested. One was on Sunday after throwing a Molotov cocktail at police. Another was for driving a motorcycle into officers. These were notable exceptions to the rule, as serious infractions by protesters were otherwise directed against property rather than people and those were not the norm.

After an intense weekend, demonstrations became calmer. Thousands peacefully rallied at City Hall. Hundreds protested outside the federal building where agents process and detain immigrants. Los Angeles protest activity occupies less than one square mile of the approximately 500 square miles of the city.

Early on, protests were calm and even joyful. People danced to live music. They linked hands in front of a line of police at the downtown federal center. Whenever tensions rose, religious leaders worked with organizers to de-escalate.

In the afternoon protesters chanted at National Guard troops and Homeland Security officers who surrounded the federal building. They shouted “Free them all!” and “National Guard go away.”

Police waited until the crowd began to thin on its own, then began to herd protesters away by firing crowd control munitions. The crowd chanted, “Peaceful protest.” Police grew more aggressive as evening wore on. Sometimes they moved forward to arrest protesters, and at one point they surrounded and detained a dozen or more.

Trump describes Los Angeles as though it is a war zone on fire, being destroyed by fanatical violent mobs of protesters.
