DJT Fires Librarian of Congress Hayden

Donald Trump abruptly fired Carla Hayden, the first woman and first African American to be Librarian of Congress, and the first professional librarian in that role since the 1970s. Her appointment was confirmed by the Senate in 2016 and her 10 year term was not due to expire until next year.

The Office of Presidential Personnel email informing her that she was fired did not even include the courtesy of a proper salutation. It read: “Carla, On behalf of President Donald J. Trump, I am writing to inform you that your position as the Librarian of Congress is terminated effective immediately. Thank you for your service.”

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt told reporters that Hayden’s service “did not fit the needs of the American people.” Leavitt accused her of having done “quite concerning things… in the pursuit of [Diversity, Equity and Inclusion]” and put “inappropriate books for children” in the library.

Registering a written work for copyright in the USA includes sending copies of it to the Library of Congress. The Library is a national research library, not a community library that checks out books to children for their reading.

The firing was condemned by Democratic members of Congress.
