DJT Fires BLS Commissioner After Weaker Than Expected Jobs Report

| 0

Donald Trump fired Erika McEntarfer from her role as Commissioner of the Bureau of Labor Statistics after she released a jobs report significantly weaker than expected and revisions took figures for earlier months downward.

The jobs report was released later in the same day Trump announced his next round of tariffs against imports from many nations.

USA employers added only 73,000 new jobs in July versus expectations of 109,000.

As a matter of normal procedure, BLS announces revisions after better data arrives. During President Joe Biden’s term in office, employment figures for 12 months in 2023-4 were revised downward by 818,000. Revised employment figures for May and June 2025 took those months down 250,000 fewer jobs than initially reported, which was announced alongside the new jobs report for July. With the exception of the height of the COVID pandemic’s early years, the May-June update was the largest revision downward since 1979.

Several experts made public statement emphasizing the importance of reliable economic data, warning Trump between the lines against installing a minion whose reports cannot be trusted.

With the new round of tariffs, poor employment figures, Trump’s firing of the messenger for those figures, and Trump’s ongoing attacks against Chair of the Federal Reserve Jerome Powell, stock markets fell.
