DJT Establishes DOGE within White House and Imposes 90 Day Hiring Freeze

Donald Trump signed an executive order rebranding the U.S. Digital Service, a White House team, as the United States Department of Government Efficiency Service (USDS). He also imposed a 90 day hiring freeze on most of the federal government.

Exemptions from the hiring freeze include the military, immigration enforcement, national security and public safety.

Within USDS is the U.S. DOGE Service Temporary Organization which is scheduled to disband 4 July 2026, a deadline set by Elon Musk. USDS is assigned to initiate software modernization.

After a 90 day federal hiring freeze, USDS is also assigned to provide a plan to reduce the federal workforce “through efficiency improvements and attrition.”

A labor union and two non-profit groups have joined together to sue Trump and the OMB on the grounds that DOGE violates the Federal Advisory Committee Act. Infractions include: DOGE members “do not have a fair balance of viewpoints,” it meets behind closed doors and it does not make records of its meetings accessible to the public.
