DJT Announces Tariffs on Practically Every Place Except Russia

| 0

Donald Trump’s “Liberation Day” speech announced USA tariffs of at least 10%, often higher, on imports from a long list of places including an uninhabited island frequented by penguins, but he will not charge tariffs against Russia.

Stock market futures around the world immediately dove off a cliff.

Trump claimed many of the tariffs he announced reciprocate tariffs charged on goods the USA sells abroad. The figures Trump cited as the tariffs he believes other countries charge on imports from the USA appeared to be nonsense, but turned out to be essentially trade deficit divided by imports, which no one other than Trump regards as tariffs.

Former Treasury Secretary Lawrence Summers posted, “It’s now clear that the [Trump] Administration computed reciprocal tariffs without using tariff data. This is to economics what creationism is to biology, astrology is to astronomy, or RFK thought is to vaccine science. The Trump tariff policy makes little sense EVEN if you believe in protectionist mercantilist economics.”

Multiple experts described Trump’s action as more like a mob boss shaking down local businesses for protection money than anything else. Trump’s son Eric underscored the shakedown view by posting, “I wouldn’t want to be the last country that tries to negotiate a trade deal with [Trump]. The first to negotiate will win—the last will absolutely lose. I have seen this movie my entire life.…”

The Financial Times wrote:

If it endures, Donald Trump’s decision on April 2, 2025 to enact sweeping “reciprocal” tariffs on US trade partners will go down as one of the greatest acts of self-harm in American economic history. They will wreak untold damage on households, businesses and financial markets across the world, upending a global economic order that America benefited from and helped to create.

Trump is only able to levy these tariffs on his own because he declared an emergency and a law passed by Congress cedes its power over tariffs to the President during such a declared emergency. Congress could end these tariffs by voting to declare the emergency over, which would cause power over tariffs to revert to Congress.

Basic tariffs will take effect Saturday 5 April 2025. Tariffs that Trump regards as reciprocal will take effect Wednesday 9 April 2025.

The White House issued the following list of tariffs Trump imposed alongside his bizarre untrue assertions of “tariffs” other countries charge on imports from the USA. Although tariffs are normally imposed on specific products, Trump aimed his tariffs against countries.
