DHS Commits Warrantless Entry into Rep. Nadler’s NY Office and Briefly Detains an Aide

Department of Homeland Security officers insisted on entering the Manhattan office of Congressional Representative Jerry Nadler (D-NY), where they handcuffed and briefly detained one of his staffers.

Protests were underway outside an immigration courthouse. Nadler’s office is in the same federal building.

Video of the incident captures a DHS agent claiming Nadler’s office was “harboring rioters.” It also captures DHS being asked whether they had a warrant and an agent admitting they did not, but entering anyway.

According to a DHS statement to Politico, a staffer “became verbally confrontational and physically blocked access to the office.” Officers handcuffed and detained the staffer in a hallway and went ahead with their search of the office. The statement claimed officers went into the office to “conduct a security check,” as they were “concerned about the safety of the federal employees in the office” due to nearby “incidents.” The statement does not mention the agents’ claim the office was sheltering protesters and does not mention the lack of a warrant to justify their intrusion.
