Defense Secretary Hegseth Renames USNS Harvey Milk

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth ordered the Navy to rename the USNS Harvey Milk, the first of several ships in the John Lewis class named to honor various civil rights leaders that Hegseth intends to rename.

Harvey Milk was discharged from the Navy at the rank of a junior lieutenant in the mid-1950s after being threatened with court martial for being gay. In 1977 he became one of the USA’s first openly gay men elected officeholders, winning a seat on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors. The next year he was assassinated.

Hegseth’s announcement was deliberately timed for Pride Month.
