CO GOP Wants Federal Funds for Colorado Withheld Until Governor Pardons Tina Peters

| 0

Some Colorado Republicans have asked Donald Trump to withhold federal funds from Colorado until Governor Jared Peters pardons former Mesa County Clerk Tina Peters, who is serving a nine year sentence for breaching the county’s voting systems.

The President cannot pardon Peters for her conviction in a state election tampering case. Only the state Governor could pardon Peters. If he withholds Congressionally appropriated funds from Colorado, he will violate both the Constitution and federal law even if his purpose was not to extort an action he wants from the Governor. Instead, the federal Department of Justice has opened an investigation into Peters’ trial.
