Chicago Churches & City Government Oppose Federal Mass Deportation Plans

In the final days before inauguration of Donald Trump as President, leaders in churches and government in Chicago publicly opposed his announced plans for mass deportations of immigrants.

Word leaked that Chicago, which is a sanctuary city, is due to be one of the first targets of mass deportation raids by the new regime. Churches and the Archbishop of Chicago issued statements condemning the deportation plan. Priests on the southwest side of the city held a mass in which they declared the church’s solidarity with immigrants in the area. They also blessed “pastoral packs” for religious prayer (such as a rosary) to distribute to immigrants.

City leaders including Mayor Brandon Johnson reiterated that Chicago is a sanctuary city. Mayor Brandon Johnson.

The city police department’s statement on the subject included “CPD does not document immigration status, and in accordance with the ordinance, does not share information with federal immigration authorities.” 

Alderman Jessie Fuentes of the 26th Ward said, “No agency sister agency of the city of Chicago is going to coordinate or work with ICE agents.” He specifically mentioned that schools will not cooperate.
