Catelin Drey, a Democratic first-time candidate, won the special election for state Senate District 1 and broke the Republican supermajority.

The seat was held by Republican Rocky De Witt until his death from pancreatic cancer in June. The district includes Sioux City and part of Woodbury County.

Republicans now hold 33 seats in the state Senate and Democrats now hold 17.

Drey won by 11 percentage points in a district that voted for Donald Trump by a 10 point margin in November 2024. She works for an advertising firm and founded the organization Moms for Iowa. She ran a grassroots campaign and pegged the affordability crisis as her top issue.

Her Republican opponent Christopher Prosch owns a media consulting company. His policy stances generally align with Trump.
