Cardinal Robert Prevost Elected to be Pope Leo XIV

A conclave of Catholic Cardinals elected Cardinal Robert Prevost as the  the 267th pontiff and chose to become Pope Leo XIV.

He is a 69-year-old Chicago native who has held dual citizenship in Peru, where he has done considerable service, for a decade. He is the first American, first Peruvian and first Augustinian friar to serve as pontiff.

Popes usually choose a name that both honors the person whose name they choose and indicates an intention to follow that person’s example. Pope Leo XIII is regarded as the founder of the social tradition in the Catholic church.

Since 2023 he has been Prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops, serving at the right hand of the Pope at the Vatican to vet nominations for bishops. He has publicly criticized Donald Trump’s regime and Vice President J.D. Vance.
