Appeals Court Temporarily Blocks Judge’s Order to Return Control of CA National Guard to Governor Newsom

The 9th Circuit Court of Appeals temporarily blocked a temporary restraining order by federal District Court Judge Charles Breyer a few hours earlier that Donald Trump’s federalization and deployment of California National Guard was illegal and control must be returned to state Governor Gavin Newsom.

The Appeals Court will hold its next hearing on this matter 17 June 2025, three days after Saturday’s nearly 2000 No Kings events across the nation. Temporary restraining orders are normally not appealable, but Trump routinely appeals them. Due to the court’s ruling, civilians who participate in any No Kings events in California may have to face armed military troops.
