Air Force veteran Gina Ortiz Jones defeated Republican Rolando Pablos, who is closely allied with the state’s extreme leaders, in a runoff to be elected the first LGBTQ+ Mayor of San Antonio, Texas.

Jones served as Air Force Under Secretary during the Biden administration.

The election is officially non-partisan, but the crowded field narrowed clearly to these two. Jones previously ran for a Congressional seat twice. All three of her election contests attracted heavy spending by both parties. Republicans spent about $1 million just on ads attacking Jones in this runoff.

She said, “With everything happening around us at the federal level and at the state level, some of the most un-American things we have seen in a very, very long time, it’s very heartening to see where we are right now.”
